Today, I started Showstoppers, a project designed to sharpen my writing skills. Here's how it works:
I select a shot from a movie or TV series. Next, I watch the show or movie for context, and then I write the scene based on what I see in the source material (the film or show). After that, I compare it to the original script (if I can find it) to see how well I did.
For this first "episode," I did Katie Bell getting cursed by the necklace/Horcrux in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Here's the shot that I wrote the scene for:
Here's what I wrote for the scene:
And here we can compare it to the original script:
All in all, I'd say not bad for my first go. However, there are some apparent differences between mine and the original script. One, my writing is more sparse. Two, I didn't capture Hagrid's speech pattern at all, but it's completely fine. Finally, I would say that my formatting is better, but otherwise, I had fun writing this scene.
What are your thoughts? Would you ever take on a project like this?
